The History of the Dark City
The city of Fesbar in the isles of Levran was founded by elven traders from the now destroyed Kingdom of Oshar. The local population was made of 13 tribes and chiefdoms of Orcs, Gnolls and Hobgoblins, all vying for control of the 7 isles. These locals used a unique form of stone that was found on the isles as weapons. These “thunder stones” released massive blasts of sound capable of cracking rock when broken, and the tribes released them from small siege weapons into each others towns and villages in sieges. The Elves built Fesbar as a trade post on the mouth of the river Gordro on the largest island of Gorton, where they traded metal weapons and magical trinkets for the thunder stones.
p. As time went on a human empire slowly swallowed the Kingdom of Oshar, and the empire (known as Mardat) inherited from the Elves the growing trade post of Fesbar. Fesbar had around 2,000 inhabitants at this time, and usually had a total population of about 5,000 from the constantly fluxing groups of traders. The emperor of Mardat, Hiulem III, decided to expand influence on the island by making Fesbar independant of local food sources. He accomplished this by transforming the land around Fesbar into a penal colony, with massive penal-slave plantations producing food for the city. Fesbar’s population exploded as a result, and reached 10,000 within 30 years. This larger population needed more land, and the criminal population had been tapped to the point where charges were invented just to get more slaves for the colony. The resulting decision was an obvious result of this shortage; Mardat conquered the inhabitants of the island and forced them into slavery. The slave population grew and grew over time, with smaller cities being planted on the other islands to the same result via order of Hiulem’s son Hezl I.
